Understanding the levels and purpose of Goals and Targets

Goals and Targets are used in Databridge to create an individualised/personalised plan for the education of a Learner. Unlike following a set curriculum undertaken by a group, Databridge Goals and Targets are designed for the purpose of the Specialist sector and Specialist organisations, to better plan and record achievement on an individual level.

What are the Levels used?

Each Learners plan is broken into 4 levels:

  • Long Term Goal
  • Medium Term Goal
  • Target
  • Objective

Tip
You can change the Labels of these Levels if you use different language to describe these steps and customise Databridge according to your organisation.

Long Term Goal

Long Term Goals are the aspirations for the Learner i.e. what they intend or plan to do after their time with yourselves. Some examples might be 'Live Independently', 'Go on to Further Education', 'Gain Employment'.

Medium Term Goal

The smaller Goal or area related to a Long Term Goal. Most commonly these are set up as Annual Goals towards the Long Term Goal. If a Long Term Goal was 'Live Independently', an example Medium Term Goal might be 'Managing Personal Hygiene', or if a Long Term Goal was 'Gain Employment in Catering Industry' an example Medium Term Goal might be 'Developing Cooking Skills'.

Information
It is common for organisations to replicate the EHCP into the Goals. Please note we have a separate EHCP Outcome area you can use as well, which will allow you to contextualise it into the Goal if you do this.

Target

Targets are linked to a Medium Term Goal to define the actionable task/skill to achieve to work towards it. Some example Targets might be 'Making a cup of tea', 'Telling the time', 'Using a cash register'.

Objective

Objectives are the steps that break down the Target. For example, if the Target was 'I will be able to dress myself', then the Objectives might be 'Put on socks with help', 'Put on trousers with help', 'Put on top with help', 'Put on socks without help', 'Put on trousers without help', 'Put on top without help', 'Get dressed in full without help'.

Each Objective has a required number of times you want the Learner to demonstrate they can do that step. For example we might say Learner A needs to demonstrate they can 'Put on trousers with help' successfully 5 times, before we are happy they can move onto the next Objective. Each of the achievements recorded against an Objective like this, helps build a live progress of the Learner from the Objective, and in turn every Level above it -> Target -> Medium Term Goal -> Long Term Goal.

Where should I start?

Before you start adding Goals and Targets, you will need to setup the appropriate 'caches' for them. If you have not set these up before, please follow the next sections on the Goal and Target Cache screens.

If these have been setup already, follow the sections on Adding Goals and Adding Targets.

Tip
We recommend speaking to us when you first set up Caches or if you have an existing one you use internally/on paper you would like to transfer over. We may be able to save you a lot of time.
